EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP

EXECUTIVE TEAM

Jay Wilgar, CEO and Director: Jay Wilgar is a seasoned entrepreneur with a proven track record of building value for investors in emerging, highly regulated industries. Prior to becoming CEO of Newstrike, Jay founded, commercialized and successfully sold, one of Ontario’s largest renewable energy development firms – AIM PowerGen.

Jay holds a BComm from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Kevin Epp, Chief Operating Officer: Kevin Epp is a seasoned operations executive with over two decades of experience in operations’ managemet and management consulting with McKinsey & Co., Union Gas, Reckitt Benckiser, Weston and CPI Plastics Group Ltd. As the Director of Operations for CPI Plastics Group Ltd., Kevin was responsible for the manufacturing of over $200 million of products across six manufacturing facilities and over 1,000 direct and indirect reports in both Canada and the US.

Kevin holds a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and a BASC from the University of Waterloo.

Jennifer Maccarone, Chief Quality Officer and VP, Regulatory and Governmental Affairs: Jennifer Maccarone is a regulatory and quality-assurance specialist with over a decade of significant compliance experience in the drug, natural health product, medical device and medical cannabis sectors. Jennifer is particularly proud of having a 100% compliance rating in more than 100 separate Health Canada audits – a track record unmatched in the industry.

Jennifer holds a BSc from Laurentian University, specialty post-graduate degrees from the Academy of Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences and is an accredited ISO auditor.

Jim Macpherson, Chief Financial Officer: Jim Macpherson is a tested financial executive with over 30 years’ experience of public practice. Jim has been a member of the chartered accountants of Australia and New Zealand, the Canadian Insolvency Practitioners Association and holds the Chartered Director Designation from McMaster University.

Jim holds a BComm from Deakin University and a Corporate Governance Designation, Chartered Director (C.Dir), from McMaster University.

Allan Rewak, Director Communications and Stakeholder Relations: Allan Rewak is an experienced public affairs and communications professional with over 15 years of progressive experience. A well-known figure at provincial legislatures across the country and on Parliament Hill, Allan was proud to have been elected Vice-Chair of Cannabis Canada, the leading association for the industry, by his peers in May 2017.

Allan Holds a BA from McMaster University and an MA from the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg.

Ruth Chun, General Counsel: Ruth Chun is a proven executive with global experience in corporate law. Previously a Director of Africa’s largest law firm, Ruth has also worked with major legal firms in Canada, and the United Kingdom. She has held executive and board positions in the financial services sector. She is admitted to legal practice in Ontario, New York and Namibia.

Ruth holds a BA (Hons) and an MA from the University of Toronto, as well as a Juris Doctor from Queen’s University.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Scott Kelly, Executive Chairman: Scott Kelly has served as a director of Newstrike since 2014 and its CEO since 2015. He is also the founder and principal of Cabrana Capital Advisors, a strategic advisory consultancy. From 2003 until 2011, he served as the Director and SVP of The Equicom Group, a financial communications consultancy that was acquired by the TMX Group in 2007.

Scott holds a BA from Queen’s University and is a graduate of the University of California (Berkeley), Haas School of Business Venture Capital Executive Program.

Liam Scott:  Liam Scott founded LSI in 1999. LSI leads organizations and individuals through the development and execution of effective internal and external communications, including brand development, sales effectiveness, product launches, employee engagement, and training. Prior to founding LSI, Mr. Scott was a Creative Director at a Toronto-based marketing agency, and was a Special Assistant to the Premier of Ontario, focused on Speechwriting and Issues Management.

Liam holds a BA from Queen’s University.

Peter Hwang: Peter Hwang is the President and co-founder of Globalfaces Direct Inc., a direct marketing, software and data analytics company serving some of the largest not for profit clients in the world. Since the inception of Globalfaces, Peter has been responsible for the strategic direction of the organization, including finance, partnerships and corporate development. Previously, Peter co-founded asset based financing firm Easylease Corp and energy retrofit provider EnWise Holdings.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Nik Van Haeren: Nik Van Haeren is the President of Enerworks Solar Heating and Cooling and Uvalux Tanning & Support, a manufacturer of solar heating equipment and large-scale energy efficient HVAC systems, and Uvalux, Canada’s largest supplier of tanning equipment, products and services to the salon industry.

Nik holds a Bachelors Degree from Western University and is a graduate from the Entrepreneurial Masters Program at MIT.

ADVISORY BOARD

Michael Letros: Michael Letros is an expert in equity capital markets, capital raising and corporate strategy.  He ran investment research and a portfolio of private and venture investments at Libra Advisors LLC, an award-winning hedge fund (now family office) in New York.  Michael previously led a team of institutional equity sales and trading professionals at National Bank Financial that provided investment advice to institutional investors in the U.S. NE and raised capital for small and medium sized Canadian public companies.

Michael earned a BA (Hons) from Queen's University at Kingston and a MA from Dalhousie University.  He is also a CFA charterholder and was most recently a Sloan Fellow at London Business School, where he was conferred with an MSc in Leadership and Strategy with Distinction.

Brian Jahns: Dr. Brian E. Jahns is an accomplished business leader with robust and progressive experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. Brian joined Roche Canada in 1998, fulfilling various medical, marketing, and sales leadership roles. There, he provided the strategic framework that allowed brands to exceed expectations.

Dr Jahns earned a BSc from the University of Western Ontario; A BPharm from Wayne State; a Pharm,D from Wayne State and is a graduate of the Queen’s University Executive Program.

Mike Egli: Mike Egli is a recognized commercial leader in Canada, having managed many portfolios with over 20 product launches, including Schering’s “Claritin.” For the last 10 years, Mike’s roles have been in senior management positions with public companies, as Managing Director for Nycomed Pharma in The Netherlands and as President & CEO of Takeda in Canada.

Mike holds a BA from Guelph University.

Jeff Craib: As a 25+ year music industry veteran, Jeff Craib has significantly contributed to the scope of entertainment people listen to - and support - at live concerts domestically and internationally. As President of The Feldman Agency (TFA) he leads a globally recognized, award-winning corporation. With more than 3000 shows annually, TFA represents an exclusive client base of more than 250 recording artists covering all genres of music. With a keen eye for branding and marketing, Jeff has overseen the growth of TFA offerings into special events, corporate relations, and new initiatives for collaboration in corporate strategy and content. He is often requested to comment on a variety of industry issues, is an active member on the CARAS board, and remains a passionate advocate for music and entertainment.

Dr. Chris Andrews: Dr. Andrews is a consultant gastroenterologist at Foothills Hospital, Associate Clinical Professor in the division of Gastroenterology at the University of Calgary, and Director of the Calgary Gut Motility Clinic, the largest such clinic in Canada. Dr. Andrews’ clinical and research interests focus on the diagnosis and management of gut motility disorders (including gastroparesis, dyspepsia, and irritable bowel syndrome) and device development in these fields. He has numerous publications and two patents. He is a Director of M Pharma, Inc.

Bernie Breen: Bernie Breen has honed his talents and built a solid reputation as a business savvy, artist-friendly, and knowledgeable artist manager. He has handled the careers of many talented artists. Working with a range of both established and budding artists, Bernie’s current roster includes: The Tragically Hip (co-managed with Patrick Sambrook), Matthew Good, actor/musician Hugh Dillon, Headstones, producer/Blue Rodeo member Colin Cripps. Bernie is a Juno and CSA award winner. He graduated with honours from the Harris Institute for the Arts (HIA). 

Patrick Sambrook: Patrick Sambrook’s career in the entertainment industry began in the early 1990’s. He started as a promoter, working secondary markets. Artist management started in a natural and organic way, with each opportunity building on the next. Patrick has built and shaped the careers of various leaders in the Canadian independent music community, including Sarah Harmer and Kathleen Edwards. Patrick’s clients have played on the biggest of world stages, like Glastonbury, SARStock, Farm Aid and numerous late night performances including Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show. In 2006, Patrick partnered with Bernie Breen Management to jointly manage The Tragically Hip.

David D'Onofrio: David D’Onofrio is a Chartered Accountant with over 10 years working experience in public accounting. During this time, David practised in both audit and taxation advisory roles with a significant focus on small to mid-cap businesses in the mining, energy and technology sectors.

David is a graduate of the Schulich School of Business, a Chartered Accountant, holds a Masters of Taxation Degree from the University of Waterloo and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Joan Chypyha: Joan Chypyha has more than 25-years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry holding various senior management positions with an emphasis on marketing, sales and business development, with more than twenty licensing deals and product launches to her credit. In her career, Ms. Chypyha spent 16 years at Hoffmann-La Roche in progressively senior marketing positions; Chief Business-Development Officer at Rhei Pharmaceuticals Ltd.; Vice President of Corporate Development and General Manager of Barrier Therapeutics Canada Inc.; Founder of Alto Pharmaceuticals Ltd, and most recently President and General Manager of Cipher Pharmaceuticals (Canada). Joan earned a BSc from University of Toronto and an Executive MBA from Queen’s University.
